Myllypuro Campus by

Smart Building Collective is proud to be working with Metropolia, the prestigious University of Applied Sciences with campuses spread across the Helsinki Capitol Area, to explore the application of smart technology in the academic setting. Metropolia is a cutting edge leading academic institution with an impressive focus on applied sciences within real estate and construction, where smart technology has become a central theme. Smart Building Collective’s strong ties to academic universities is well known, and as campuses get even smarter, this collaboration’s potential expands. Together with Smart Building Collective we will use the Myllypuro campus to not only assess how well they have integrated smart technologies, but use this opportunity to influence the education process and management of smart campuses, as well as share best practices beyond their boundaries.

“We are absolutely delighted to include Metropolia into the academic ecosystem as well as have them as our first University certification. We believe in our shared mission of educating the world around the power of smart, we will use their case and expertise to showcase to the world what’s possible with smart and where we have opportunity to learn together. We are excited to do so.” - Nicholas White, Managing Director at Smart Building Collective

Myllypuro campus is one of the 4 campuses that makes up Metropolia University. Comprised of a smart lab and full smart building functionality, it is the perfect baseline to influence and share best practices. Together we will benchmark this building against the Smart Building Certification framework and other buildings, to learn and share opportunities across the applied sciences group.

The requirements for the Smart Building Certificate are classified in 6 categories

1) building usage 2) building performance 3) health safety and security 4) building environment 5) user experience and collaboration 6) connectivity and integrative design. Metropolia strives to score as high as possible for each category, but also with heightened focus on the benchmark and what can be learned from others following a similar journey. These themes set a framework for continuous exploration and discussion.

"Metropolia: Smart buildings play a key role in meeting the challenges of sustainability and green transfer. The data produced by the users and processes in the built environment are crucial for the optimization of the performance and responding to the fluctuations of the green energy systems. At Metropolia, we want to work together with students, staff and partners to make the best use of it. Our Myllypuro Campus is the platform enabling this.” Jorma Säteri Head of school

The Smart Building Collective, which has developed the Smart Building Certification framework to promote wellbeing, sustainability, performance, innovation, and health and safety in the built environment, recognises buildings that have smart tech infrastructure in place to evaluate a building’s behavior and performance. The first building awarded a Platinum Smart Building Certification was EDGE Olympic Amsterdam.
