Exploring the Future of Smart Buildings: Smart Building Collective's Journey at the Smart Building Show

The world of smart buildings is evolving at a rapid pace, and the Smart Building Collective recently had the privilege of attending the Smart Building Show, where we connected with existing members and had the opportunity to meet new people who share our passion for advancing this exciting field. Our visit to the show was filled with insightful discussions, product launches, and valuable takeaways that promise to shape the future of smart buildings.

A Landmark Occasion: Launching the SBC Consultancy Certification

One of the highlights of our visit to the Smart Building Show was the official launch of our Smart Building Certification Consultancy Certification. This marks a significant step in our journey to set and uphold the highest standards in smart building practices, support the community in their collaborative and innovation efforts. We're committed to advancing the industry by ensuring that smart buildings meet the highest quality and sustainability benchmarks.

Insights from Visionaries

During our visit, we had the privilege of listening to and engaging with visionaries who shared profound insights into the world of smart buildings:

Alessandro Nacci - Sofia (ISEO)

Alessandro Nacci enlightened us about the dynamic interplay between technology and servitization in modern residential structures. He emphasized that service is the primary value creator, underpinning sustainability, value generation, and circularity. In his view, technology is merely a tool, and the real value comes from the service it provides. Sofia, a company specializing in access control, exemplifies how technology can empower asset owners with better control and enhanced value.

Ciaran Kelly - Hoare Lea

Ciaran Kelly brought our attention to the eagerly awaited RIBA Smart Buildings Overlay. He delved into the evolving technology trends, highlighting the increasing speed at which information is accessed, connectivity, and mobility. It's essential to note that the RIBA overlay is not a one-size-fits-all solution; instead, it focuses on value generation rather than providing a step-by-step guide on how to design a smart building.

Dr. Jimmy Abualdenien - Nemetschek Group

A truly exciting moment at the show was the launch of Nemetschek Group's dTwin, an immersive digital twin that consolidates the operability of various platforms into one. This innovation has the potential to redefine how we interact with and manage smart building systems, simplifying the complexities of digital twins. As the Nemetschek Group they have a wide variety of technologies that can feed this new digital twin, but it is open and operable with many others. Watch this space.

Ian Ellis - Siemens

Ian Ellis shared valuable insights into using Building Management Systems (BMS) for enhancing well-being within smart buildings. Going beyond energy efficiency, he showcased the full spectrum of capabilities offered by the Siemens navigator. This system has been present in quite a few of our certified buildings and the capabilities are impressive. Get in touch to learn more.

Unveiling the Reality of Smart Buildings

The show also provided us with an opportunity to explore the practicality of smart buildings. Cisco's presentation was a standout moment, illustrating that the reality of smart buildings does meet the hype. Just a few years ago, this might not have been the case, but the transition is happening, and it's undeniably exciting. Cisco is making substantial investments of 6 billion euros this year in research and development which signals a strong push into the smart building space. Their advancements in the field are leaving us eagerly anticipating what's to come from them.

A Beacon of Clarity: Matthew Marson from JLL

Matthew Marson's presentation, titled "No regrets - How Smart Buildings are Valuable in Uncertain Times," was undoubtedly one of the most inspiring moments of the show. Matthew has a unique talent for simplifying complex themes, providing clear insights into how to realize a return on investment in smart buildings.

Schneider Electric's Digital Solutions and the Need for Flexibility

Kas Mohammed of Schneider Electric discussed digital solutions for enhanced energy efficiency and sustainability. He emphasized the importance of flexibility in RIBA design, particularly in adapting to the rapid innovation cycles of technology. Long-term, rigid contracts don't align with the fast-paced evolution of technology, making adaptability a key consideration in smart building design.

Security at the Forefront

Security emerged as a central theme during our visit. Trevor Miles, Ashley Bateaup, and Andrew Knight highlighted the critical nature of security, particularly in an environment where IP addresses are vulnerable to breaches on the dark web. Smart buildings are susceptible, and it's essential to enhance security measures to safeguard these valuable assets.

Unlocking Data Silos for Sustainability

Billal Vindhani of SPACEWELL | A Nemetschek Company shared insights on Facilities Management, Workplace, and Sustainability. Breaking down data silos is a pivotal step toward making Facilities Management and Maintenance more proactive. Sustainability is not only an aspiration but a practical outcome of efficient data utilization.

Innovations Unveiled: bGrid launched a new interactive website and hinted towards something beyond exciting…. With a first glance for those present at the show, next time you should join ; )

The Smart Building Certification assesses the “smartness” of buildings - but because every building is different and smart building practices are evolving, the smart building certification is not a checklist. Each building is certified individually based on our unique peer-review model and our SBC framework to assess how a smart asset is actually functioning.
